Snow Lantern
The snow keeps falling.
It's very unusual for Jeju to get this much snow.
Usually Hallasan gets most of it but down on the lower altitudes the snow falls very occasionally and melts right away.
This winter, though, has been what I call a real winter.
Today we have at least 10 cm snow (XD I know I know, but it is A LOT for Jeju, ok?) and it keeps coming. The weather app tells me it will keep snowing for two days and then again during this weekend.
Since I don't trust the weather forecast, I decided to not wait any longer; I had to make at least one snow lantern this winter and it was going to happen today! 😤
TY got the idea to build an igloo but it turned out more like a pretty snow hut. Here is a short clip of it!😀
Did someone else now that this kind of snow lantern is a typical Swedish and Norwegian thing? I had no idea until I googled. 🤣
To me it is one of the most basic and cozy winter activities there is and it was always perfect for Goteborg, since 95% of the snow we get is wet snow. 😑 I guess Jeju is also a perfect place then. 😂
Anyway, here are a few tips for making that lantern! 😄
You need
⛇Snow (wet)
🕯Tealight (+ lighter - unless you're a master of making 🔥 from stones and sticks)
Tips!
1. You need the wet kind of snow. It must be moldable.
If the snow you've got is too dry you can add a bit of water to it 👍.
2. The snowballs should be consistent and even.
3. Furry mittens can become a problem. 😑
We don't want to get those mittens stick to the snowballs and demolish the whole thing on the last row.
4. Leave a hole for the tealight in the bottom to easily put it in.
5. If you get frustrated, don't be like me and throw away the balls in wrath. This will only waste time since you have to make new snowballs.
Instead, take off your mittens and assemble the lantern quickly before your hands freezes to icicles.
How to quickly make a snow lantern
1. Start by making all the snowballs. I use about ten for the foundation and then lesser and lesser for every round. (20-30 will be enough? Maybe?)
2. Flatten out a nice spot where the lantern will stand.
3. Start by putting snowballs in a circle (about ten?) and then build a tower that gets less wide for every floor built. ^^
*Psst! Don't forget that little doorhole for the tealight!*
4. It's optional to leave a hole in the top or not.
If there is no hole the snow might drip and collapse on the tealight, just so you know.
5. Light a little tealight and carefully put it in the middle.
6. Feast your eyes and stay cozy! 😄
P.S [I wrote this post about 2 days ago. So the snow has all disappeared once again! But I heard its coming back for a visit this weekend ;)]
