🍡Sweet & Salty Rice Cake Snack 🍡

This is the ultimate snack for anyone who likes the combination of salty and sweet... and crispy and chewy!! 😁

Anyone who is at least a bit into Korean culture and food knows about ddeok (떡) or rice cakes that come in so many different shapes and tastes.

The common one for food though is mostly used in ddeokbokki - rice cakes in a spicy red sauce. Yum 😋

And that is the type of rice cake I used for this recipe.

Quite a while back TY made this snack and as soon as I tried it I was stuck 😂.

A few days ago I wanted to try to make it myself and according to TY there was supposed to be a recipe for it somewhere, but no matter how I googled and searched on Naver I only found recipes for ddeokbokki and another super old recipe from the Joseon era that was served to the king 👑. That was waaaay to complicated and had a loooong list of ingredients... 😑

So I abandoned the Internet and just made something...very easy, very quick and very addicting! 😄 haha!

*Psst! Don't tell him but I think this turned out better than the one TY made* 😉

OK. Here we go!

I n g r e d i e n t s

15 fresh rice cakes (the kind used for ddeokbokki)

Vegetable oil

1 tsp Sesame oil

1 tbs Korean soy sauce*

2 tbs Corn syrup (or similar - like glucose syrup)

1/3 dl Brown sugar

A dash of sweet rice wine for cooking (Mirin)

TOPPING

Roasted sesame seeds

Cinnamon powder

*Japanese soy sauce would probably work fine too.

D i r e c t i o n s

  1. If the rice cakes are not soft enough microwave them for half a minute or so.

  2. Heat up a frying pan and add the oil. Toss in the rice cakes and fry them golden and crispy on all sides. Put on a small plate.

  3. Add the sesame oil, soy sauce, syrup, brown sugar and the rice wine in the frying pan and stir while on low heat until the sugar is all melted. It will only take a minute or two so be careful to not leave it there for too long - which would make it hard like caramel.

  4. Turn off the heat and stir a bit in the now very bubbly sauce to let the bubbles out. Drizzle over the rice cakes.

  5. Sprinkle some sesame seeds and cinnamon on top and yum yum yum...

There! Easy peasy! 😄😄
