Touch the Sky
What is a better thing to do on a nice day in fall than to climb a hill? The weather is not too hot or cold and the sky is high and the air is crisp and one is surrounded by the golden forest. It's basically perfect.
A good place to go is Eoseungsaengak (어승생악) close to Eorimok (which is one of the paths to climb Mt. Halla) and is located high up on the mountain so even if the climb up the hill is fairly easy the view at its peak at 1 169 meters above sea level is amazing!
Just before starting the 1.3 km climb up one is told to beware of wild boars lurking in the forest. It was a bit disturbing to me that the sign only said to beware of them and not providing any tips of exactly what to do upon encountering one.
Like should I run? Stand still? Climb a tree? Sing it a lullaby? Challenge it by oinking back? I have only seen signs like that in the higher mountain area here in Jeju. The other places usually just tells you to beware the vipers - which feels much easier to follow - basically 'Do not step on any snakes'. Anyway moving on, climbing this hill while contemplating on how to react if we met a boar, every little sound in the bushes got me startled and looking for the nearest climbable tree ><
But we made it to the top without any unpleasant meetings ^^
That view was very rewarding for a simple 20-30 min climb though!
We could see the whole northern part of Jeju - east to west. And basically all the way to mainland Korea as well. In east we could see Udo (Cow Island) and Seongsan Ilchulbong (sunrise peak).
The only sad thing was that we didn't bring any snacks or drinks. It would have been perfect.
But we did have a soap bubble blower! ^^
